"Weeds" Season Four DVD Review

"Weeds" Season Four DVD Review

“Weeds” is a popular Showtime series that follows the life of Nancy Botwin (Played by Mary-Louise Parker), a soccer mom who turns to dealing drugs to support her family after the death of her husband. If you’ve never seen this program, you might think that it glamourizes drug use – but on the contrary, this biting comedy actually delivers an anti-drug message.

I had never watched this series until I popped in this DVD, and I wasn’t sure how well I’d be able to follow the storyline. Season four continues a dramatic cliffhanger from the previous season, but I was able to catch up quickly and was soon immersed in the plot. Nancy is a suburban soccer mom whose life is turned upside down when her husband suddenly dies. She becomes a drug dealer to support her two sons, and we watch as her dabbling takes her deeper and deeper into a highly dangerous world. The slippery slope begins as she starts dealing to a few “friends”; by season four, she is on the run after burning down her own house to hide the evidence of her operation. She becomes embroiled with the Mexican mafia and begins smuggling both drugs and illegal immigrants across the border. Her obsession with earning more and more money blinds her to the grave harm she is causing her family; we watch as Nancy risks death and imprisonment on a daily basis – I was on the edge of my seat during one tense scene where Nancy’s car is searched by border patrol during a drug run. As she narrowly escapes arrest, the viewer can only think, why? And yet, she can’t stop.

“Weeds” is a dark comedy, and its outrageous humor falls somewhere between Pulp Fiction and Cheech and Chong. I personally found their scathing take on drug culture to be hilarious, but suffice to say it is not for the faint of heart. This show touches on some very serious topics – however irreverent their take may be. I won’t spoil the fun by giving away the twists and turns in this season, but I found it to be very compelling and I had never even seen the program previously. I don’t have the Showtime channel, but I will definitely be checking out season five once it gets released on DVD.

The three-disc Weeds: Season Four box set can be found on Amazon.com for $20.49.
