Through our ongoing Teacher Feature series, we’ve begun raising awareness for educators who need our support. If you read my eye-opening interview in August, then you know that many teachers across the nation are struggling to keep up with a lack of direct classroom support for essential supplies. Some teachers are digging into their own pockets to purchase snacks and hygiene items for underprivileged students, while others are struggling to afford the basic essentials they need to teach; shockingly, one educator I spoke with actually took out debt to buy required classroom items.
We know that so many schools are lacking essential items, and too many teachers aren’t getting the support they need. That is why Contest Corner stands with the Portland teachers who are currently on strike. There are many reasons behind the strike, including the fact that many classes are so large that there are not enough desks for every child, often with temperatures over 90 degrees; you can get more information on the strike by visiting PDXTeachers.org. I have loved ones who work in the Portland school system, so I have firsthand knowledge of how this is impacting educators.
