The Three Gifts is a story about three teenage boys who get caught stealing children’s candy at Halloween. The judge presiding over their case decides on an unorthodox sentence, calling for 100 hours of community service to be completed at a local Women’s Crisis Center before December 25th. The boys balk at having to do something so “Uncool” and lament that it will eat into their time playing sports. But as they volunteer at the center babysitting a little girl and get to know her family, the young men learn more about themselves then they ever could have imagined – and discover the true meaning of Christmas and family.
Daris Howard has a very sincere writing style and I thought this novel was both thoughtful and touching. There are many Christmas stories where a flawed character redeems themselves through the spirit if giving, but what struck me about The Three Gifts was the amount of compassion in the writing. It’s a very sweet story and I did have a lump in my throat at the end! This would make a great read for anyone who wants to get cozy with a book this holiday season, or to gift to a family member!
