If you’re headed to the beach for a weekend getaway, you’ll need something fun to read while you lounge by the shore. The Cuban Chronicles: A True Tale of Rascals, Rogues, and Romance by Wanda St. Hilaire is perfect beach reading fodder – a lively tale recounting St. Hilaire’s travel adventures, Cuban Chronicles was culled from a selection of letters written to a good friend in Paris, detailing the highs and lows of her unexpected vacation to Cuba. Ending up in Havana at the last minute after a planned journey to Mexico fell through, St. Hilaire embarks on a colorful sojourn where she is swept up in a romance that quickly sours when her lover turns out to be frighteningly unhinged. It was interesting to read about her adventures and hear her observations after witnessing poverty in Cuba firsthand. My stomach churned as she recounted her experience of traveling alone and trying to avoid her scary suitor after enduring his threats and menacing; but fortunately, this story has a happy ending. With summer fast approaching, you might want to tuck this in your beach bag for some vacation reading!
The Cuban Chronicles: A True Tale of Rascals, Rogues, and Romance is available on Amazon for $14.78. AME, Inc. provided me with a copy of this book for review.
