The Clean Up Crew: Interview With Jon Keeyes & Swen Temmel

Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in the virtual press day for The Clean Up Crew and speak with the director, Jon Keeyes, and actor Swen Temmel. This action movie is sharply funny and visually captivating, beautifully shot with vibrant colors that set the mood and create an immediate ambiance.

The film follows a motley crime scene cleaning crew consisting of Alex (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), his girlfriend Meagan (Ekaterina Baker), their paranoid co-worker Chuck (Swen Temmel) and boss Siobhan (Melissa Leo). While cleaning up the scene of a gang shootout, they discover a suitcase containing £2 million in cash. But what they don’t know is that the cash was intended to be a hush money payment from local crime boss Gabriel (Antonio Banderas) to law enforcement, and soon the gang is in over their heads when Meagan is kidnapped as leverage to get the money back. Will the cleaners be able to take out the trash and save Meghan before it’s too late?

The Clean Up Crew is an action-packed dark comedy that will have you rooting for the antiheros. The movie is striking and atmospheric, with very stylized and creative action sequences. Director Jon Keeyes spoke to me about how he developed the look of the film, and how he balanced the gritty and sometimes violent subject matter with dark humor.

At the heart of these visually captivating action sequences is actor Swen Temmel, whose character engages in everything from gunplay to swordfighting. He spoke with me about the work that went into choreographing these scenes to make them look as authentic as possible.

“I hope everybody gets to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it,” Temmel told me during our conversation. “It’s an absolute fun ride. As much action as there is in this movie, it’s an absolute blast, and I think you’ll get a couple of laughs out of it as well.”
