Rod Stewart dropped his first-ever Christmas album, Merry Christmas, Baby on October 30th, 2012, sure to please both existing Stewart fans and casual listeners alike. I grew up listening to ’50s and ’60s Christmas albums on vinyl, so when I hear “Updated” modern versions of Christmas carols, it just doesn’t feel the same to me. While I have no problem with artists putting their own spin on a record, I find it hard to connect emotionally to a carol if it’s re-created with 808 drums! And that’s what I really appreciate about Merry Christmas, Baby: The smooth, classic approach that was taken with these standards – it holds true to the warmth and melody of how these songs should sound. Stewart is in top form here, with his smooth crooning a perfect fit for these beloved songs.

There is a combination of classic hymms (“Silent Night”, “What Child is This”) and more upbeat, contemporary cuts (“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, “Silver Bells”) – even “Auld Lang Syne” makes an appearance! My favorite song on here is actually the title track, which is a duet with Cee-Lo Green – their vocals really compliment each other here. There are several other collaborations on the album, from “Winter Wonderland” with Michael Bublé, “We Three Kings” with Mary J. Blige, and even a posthumous collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald on “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”, which samples the late singer’s vocals.
