I’m one of the few people left who doesn’t have a full-time cellphone. I primarily use a landline, because the majority of the calls I make are international, and I have yet to see any affordable cellular plans for worldwide calls. I do have a “Pay-as-you go” cell, so that I can get in touch with people in case I have an emergency – you never know when you might get a flat tire or need to call for help while driving. I also use this same number to sign up for sweepstakes, so that my primary phone number doesn’t get overrun with junk calls! It’s worked out quite well for me, and given that my current plan only costs me $25 per year, it’s a totally affordable option.
Another company that offers prepaid cell phone service is Boost Mobile. I’ve never used their service personally, but I’ve heard a lot about it. They offer several different phones & service plans – pay-as-you-go has gotten quite advanced since I bought my little phone five years ago! If you want something with a lot of options, you can get a Blackberry or even a i1 smartphone. The advantage I could see to purchasing a plan through Boost Mobile is that there are no contracts – through their Re-Boost program, you simply reload your phone plan monthly. You can pay online, in person, or over the phone with a credit or debit card – a generous friend or family member can even pay the bill for you! (An option for parents of teens/college students, perhaps?)
Since Boost supports smartphones, this gives an option for those who want to stay connected to social networks while using a pay-as-you-go plan. Honestly, I know I’ll need to get a “real” cellphone in the near future, primarily so that I can have web access on the go. My job revolves around the Internet, so it’s crucial that I can access email and stay up-to-date while on the go. But in the meantime, my ancient little prepaid phone is doing its job quite nicely!
