The gift of music is a popular choice for the holiday season, and for good reason. Who wouldn’t love to unwrap a new album by their favorite artist? Music plays such a personal and important role in our day to day lives – if you give a loved one a CD, they will think of you every time they listen to it. The key is knowing the recipient’s taste well enough to choose the right album!
For me, the choice was clear when I received a copy of Paula Cole’s Ithaca in the mail. One of my friends from out of state flew in to visit me some time ago, and during her stay she played a compilation that included one of Cole’s songs. I knew right away that she would love this disc!
Paula Cole – Ithaca – $12.99
Ithaca dropped on September 21st, and breaks new ground for Cole with a somewhat edgier feel than her earlier efforts. Famous for hits like “I Don’t Want to Wait” and “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone”, the Lilith Fair alumni’s newest work retains her heartfelt lyrical power, punctuated by the sting of heartbreak and hardship. Cole has said that “My albums are like Polaroid snapshots of my life,” and it’s very apparent in her extremely truthful, relatable lyrics. Ithaca takes us on a journey that is gently mournful (“Elegy”), at times sarcastic (“P.R.E.N.U.P.”), and ultimately upbeat (“Come On Inside”). Cole’s vocals range from soft and sweet to deep and powerful – the perfect compliment to the musical tones and textures of Ithaca.
Ithaca track listing:
1. The Hard Way
2. Waiting On A Miracle
3. Music In Me
4. Elegy
5. Come On Inside
6. P.R.E.N.U.P.
7. Violet Eyes
8. Somethin’ I’ve Gotta Say
9. Sex [Explicit]
10. 2 Lifetimes

I remember Paula Cole from the theme song on Dawson’s Creek. I used to watch that show all the time and love the song. Her high pitch notes and sweet voice. The CD looks like it would be great and perfect for a stocking stuffers. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I really like her! She has a great sound.
She has a beautiful voice and wow, she is the musician behind her album, too! That takes real talent. 🙂 I hadn’t ever heard of her before – thanks for the intro!
She sang with Peter Gabriel so you know she has to be good PLUS she’s from Boston. =) I’m getting this CD for my MIL. Thanks for the review.
I saw Paula Cole live at the TripleDoor venue in Seattle Wash. On Nov1 2010. I cannot say enough about her music. My Boyfriend introduced me to her music,, a year ago. I fell in love with her. She is that awesome! Live even better, I was so awestruck, by her voice. If you ever can see her live.. Do it!
