Our Handmade Gifts Review

You may remember artist Deborah Carney from my review of Loxly Gallery, the online showcase which she developed. In addition to art prints, Carney also offers jewelry pieces on Our Handmade Gifts.com, ranging from handcrafted earrings to customized photo pendants.

I received several items from Our Handmade Gifts recently to review. When we were discussing the Custom Photo Pendant line, I was asked to send a variety of pictures that I might like to see on a piece of jewelry. As I mulled it over, I decided that these would make perfect gifts. I sent in three photos: A photo of Jai’s Grandpa, a photo of a friend’s horse, and a picture of Jai and I. The pendants turned out so nicely that they were featured n a promotional photo in the shop:

I gave two of the pendants as Christmas gifts. The pendant of Grandpa was one of our presents to Grandma, which she appreciated and has since hung on the wall. Grandpa passed away in early 2009, so it was a memorial to him. Meanwhile, my friend was surprised with the pendant of her horse for Christmas, which made for a fun little personalized gift. I kept the pendant of Jai and I, because I thought it would make a neat memento:

I think that creating customized jewelry with family photos makes for a great keepsake. These pendants are crafted with mini canvas prints applied to polymer clay, and as such, there are irregularities that you would expect with a handmade item – the pendants are not a uniform square, and there are some bumps on each one. But I think that most people who buy handmade do so because they don’t want something that looks like it got churned out of a machine.

I was also sent a really neat pair of earrings. I’m one of the few people on the planet who doesn’t have pierced ears, so I’m not able to try wearing them myself, but I will pass them on to one of my friends – like I said, jewelry makes a great gift!
