I’m a junk food junkie, but there’s one snack I had never heard of before: Kale chips. So when Brad’s Raw Foods offered to send me a sampler of their unique snacks, I knew I had to take them up on the offer. So what on earth are Kale chips? These unique chips are made from vegetables, seeds, whole grains and spices; and instead of being baked or fried, they are dehydrated below 115 degrees. These snacks are gluten free and suitable for vegans and those who are on a raw food diet (or just interested in raw eating).
I received this box in the mail with a generous sampling of snacks from Brad’s Raw Foods. There was a bag of Kale chips, a bag of Red Bell Pepper chips, and three boxes of Raw Leafy Kale, which is a unique crunchy snack combining dehydrated Kale leaves with cashews.
Raw Leafy Kale
We tried the Raw Leafy Kale first, because I was eager to open the “Vampire Killer” garlic flavor – you know how I love garlic! The ingredients are very simple: It contains kale, red bell pepper, cashews, sunflower seeds, lemon juice, scallions, nutritional yeast, garlic, and Himalayan sea salt. This was hands-down our favorite out of all the snacks we sampled from Brad’s Raw Foods. Raw Leafy Kale snacks definitely have a unique flavor, and if you’re not used to eating this type of food, it may take some getting used to. The more I munched on the Raw Leafy Kale, the more it grew on me. We also sampled their “Nasty Hot!” and “Naked” flavors – the spicy one was our second favorite, and is indeed quite hot!
Kale Chips
Next up, we tried the Kale Chips and Red Bell Pepper Chips. These are a more “Traditional” snack, with the natural raw ingredients dehydrated into a thin chip form. At first, the flavor struck me as being like a Wheat Thin made of cardboard. I wasn’t too crazy about it at first, but I came to appreciate the flavor more after eating several of them. My favorite of the Raw Chips was the Red Bell Pepper variety.
Kale Chips are definitely an acquired taste, and if you’re used to eating things like cheesy poofs for snacks, you might be a little shocked to open up a package of Raw Leafy Kale and see a bunch of dehydrated leaves. However, I think it’s worth keeping an open mind, because once I got used to the flavor, I found that I quite enjoyed it. On the package, it says that these Kale chips are a “Meal in a Bag! Loaded with: omega-3s, live enzymes, lean protein, complex carbs, vital minerals, vitamins, nutrients & fiber. The bag consists of a complete food group!”; and to be honest, these Kale chips were our breakfast/lunch for two days! It was convenient to snack on them, and they ended up being very filling. This would be good to have on hand for those moments when I have a craving for something salty and crunchy – this might satisfy that craving without me reaching for a bag of those cheesy poofs! 😀

These sound like an interesting but healthy snack 🙂
Oh wow….these sound really interesting. I have never heard of them before! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
EWE they look scary to me, you are brave to eat Kale!
I love Kale and actually make my own Kale chips. However, I’ve never tried these and I’d love too. I have to see where I can buy these.
I love junk food and I LOVE chips. I will have to try these out. The Vampire Killer is an interesting name for a flavor of chip. I must try it too!
I’ve never tried kale chips. I tried seaweed chips once and those were very different. The kale chips do sound good and I’d like to give them a try sometime.
Interesting, I wonder if I could get my kids to eat these or not. Seems like it is worth a try.
They look delicious. I love the fun names and “raw” packaging too.
I’d definitely try them. Especially the spicy ones! I’d never heard of these, thanks for the review. I’m always looking to find healthier snacks.
I’ve been intrigued by these for while now but haven’t tried them yet. They do sound good!
The red bell pepper chips sound scrumptious! I made my own kale chips recently, and I would venture a guess that these were better. LOL.
These sound yummy! I have made baked kale chips before, but never the dehydrated kind. I think I saw these in Whole Foods, I’m going to give them a try. Then I’m going to try to recreate something similar in my own dehydrator…hope the kiddies like it!!!
