I’ve always been intrigued by self-improvement books, so when I was asked if I’d like to review It’s Just My Nature! by Carol Tuttle, I thought it would be a fun read. At first glance, I thought it would be more of a general self-help book, but Nature is almost like a personality test mixed with a sort of reverse astrology. The book focuses on using the elements of the earth in “Energy profiling”, which breaks personalities down into the four elements of nature: Type 1, Nitrogen/Air; Type 2, Oxygen/Water; Type 3, Hydrogen/Fire; and Type 4, Carbon/Earth. Tuttle uses earthy analogies to describe her four personality types, and encourages the reader to determine which of the types they feel best describes them. The profile I related to the most was Type 2, so according to Tuttle that means I am represented by the qualities of air and H2O. I always find these kind of books to be great for lighthearted, entertaining reading – but I take these sort of concepts as simply interesting philosophical parables. Nothing more, nothing less. Notions such as these have the potential to spark introspection in the reader and possibly lead to greater self-awareness as a result, but Nature is a too fey for a skeptic like me to take literally.
