It boggles my mind to think how much the world has changed in recent years and what a different experience today’s kids will have growing up than when I was a child – which, ahem, was really not that long ago, I swear. 😉 Of course, one of the most fundamental differences is the Internet – the very means by which you are reading this, which we so readily take for granted as a necessary part of daily life, was not something that I had access to until I was a tweenager in 1996. Now, kids are on the Internet practically before they can talk! I think it’s a very exciting time to be alive. However, this also brings up new topics that parents must consider in keeping their children safe. We all know how much gross stuff is online – I still regret clicking on links from time to time! – so what measures can be taken to shield children from the unpleasant and inappropriate parts of the web? I don’t think there are any easy answers to that – but I do know that the web is far too valuable tool for education and life skills to cut kids off from. Parents in the 21st century have to think on their feet and be ready to adapt to these every-changing times in order to make appropriate decisions to both manage unwanted content without depriving children of essential technology skills.
