I have something of a bunny art wall that I’ve been collecting over the years, so when Goose & Pebble reached out to ask if I’d like to review one of their custom hand-drawn illustrations, I was charmed by their whimsical style and thought it would be perfect for a rabbit portrait! Goose & Pebble is a small business run by Australian artist Melissa, who draws portraits based on photographs, offering everything from family portraits to pet portraits. Goose & Pebble also has the ability to create composite portraits from multiple photographs, which inspired me: I thought it would be lovely to commission a portrait that portrayed all of the rabbits I’ve owned over the years in one group. I’ve previously told the story of how I came to be a “Pet Parent”, when four domestic rabbits were abandoned in my yard. Fast forward to almost 7 years later, and I’ve now owned a total of 6 rabbits. All of my bunnies came to me with pre-existing health issues, and four of them were senior buns; and I think anyone who’s rescued animals in these situations knows how heartbreaking it can sometimes be – I went through a period where 5 of them passed away, one after the other. But I know I gave them a wonderful life for the time that they had; and the bright side is that my current bun, Keeli, has made it to 11 years and 6 months old! That’s roughly the equivalent of a human being in their late 90s, and I’m so happy that we’ve been able to provide this amazing retirement home for her.

I loved the idea of having all of “Beeb’s Bunnies” in one portrait, so I sent Melissa the following photos:

She was very helpful and nice to work with, and less than a week later she sent me a digital version of the portrait and let me know the framed print was on its way:

As you can see, she did a fantastic job! The illustration is adorable and charming, and really captures the personality of the bunnies. I love the little touches that she added, like the fact that she grouped them all together eating pellets – that is exactly what my rabbits would be doing if they were all hanging out together! She placed them together in a way that looks natural – if I didn’t know, I would assume this was created from one reference photo, because it looks like they’re all meant to be together. Four photos with six rabbits is a lot to combine, so I think this is a great example of her work! While she creates her work based on photos, it’s hand-drawn with her own distinct style rather than just being a tracing, so it’s true art.

The print arrived at my door from Australia in just 11 days. Wow! The print looks beautiful in the frame, and it’s a wonderful new addition to my art collection, with extra special meaning because it shows all my beloved bunnies together; I displayed the portrait under a shelf right by Keeli’s enclosure.
