Living on wetlands near the woods has a lot of benefits – I feel so fortunate to have gorgeous scenery and wildlife around me. Unfortunately, sometimes the wildlife gets a little too close for comfort when I find rats in my attic! Rodents are so crafty and they can find their way in almost anywhere. One of the things I’ve learned is that it’s important for me to have a wide selection of traps and repellents around, and to update them frequently, even when there’s no active problem; preventing rats is a lot easier than trying to get rid of them once they get in. I never say “No” to new rat deterrents, even though I already have many in place. Maybe that seems paranoid, since it’s not like my house was on Infested or anything like that. 😉 But in my opinion, one rat is too many so I want to do all I can to avoid them!
So when Earth-Kind offered to send me a box of their Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent, I was all over it! This product has been around since 1995, but apparently I’ve been out of the rat repellent loop because this was this first time I’d heard of them.
This product offers a unique way to prevent mice and rats, with all-natural scented sachets that you place in trouble areas to discourage rodent activity. The packets resemble potpourri and are made from botanical extracts and plant fibers; the idea is that the scent is unpleasant to rats, but not to humans. To humans, they actually smell good – the fresh scent reminded me of Christmas, since it utilizes balsam fir oil. I’d be OK with these if they were just meant to freshen musty areas, but if they can get rid of rodents, then that’s even better! I love the idea of preventing mice from getting here in the first place. I may not enjoy having them in my home but I also really dislike having to kill them – far better if we can just stay out of one another’s space altogether!
We received a sampler containing 4 pouches, so Jai tucked them into some common trouble spots where we have found rats before, such as the bathroom crawlspace cubbyhole and the attic. This is one of those times where “No news is good news”, so if they do work then nothing should happen because no rats will come. They do offer a 100% refund if you are dissatisfied, which I thought was nice!
Update – July 19th, 2013: I had to do a quick update on this post. About half an hour ago, I heard a terrific clatter in the bathroom – there was a rat stuck on one of our glue traps in the bathroom crawlspace. It’s kind of weird, since we haven’t had any sign of rodent activity whatsoever in what, 6 months? And we just put the Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent in that same cubbyhole yesterday. So, it didn’t repel this particular rat, at least.

The air freshners would be great to try
Ms. Ashcroft,
Thank you for your honest review of Fresh Cab Botanical Rodent Repellent. Rodents are some of the hardest to control indoor pests there are. Many people do not realize that sticky traps and poisons actually have food attractants in them to lure the rat or mice in. Fresh Cab works to repel the rodents, therefore when used together it is not uncommon to find rodents on traps. They will come in just long enough to try to get the food on the trap and get caught in the process.
We understand that many people like to use multiple methods and think more is better. However, Fresh Cab does work best on its own. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have to help you get rid of rodents. Thank you again for the honest review of your experience.
