I’ve had a long-standing fascination with books about entertaining. My parents used to buy old cookbooks at yard sales, so I grew up reading manuals from the 1950s on the best ways to throw a fabulous party. I was always taken with this idea, which in a strange way has lent to my rather old-fashioned approach when it comes to hosting gatherings and guests. So when I received a promotional copy of Entertain Like a Gentleman from David Harap in the mail, it brought back those fond memories and drew my interest in the same way. The idea of this book is to teach the single man how to be the best host ever, with a selection of bachelor-recipes-turned-gourmet such as Chipotle Marshmallow Crispy Treats. Like any good book about the tenants of entertaining, the advice is at once a mixture of good ideas and fantasy. There is solid advice about stocking your kitchen and anticipating how much food you will need for an event, giving an old-school philosophy on hosting a good event a modern touch, encouraging bachelors to learn good entertaining skills with amusing touches like Venn diagrams about salad. While I can’t imagine any man I know baking peach scones, I can definitely appreciate the nudge that is provided to today’s bachelors to learn some of the fine arts that are slowly dying out. I thought this book was really fun and I might just keep it for myself even though I’m no gentleman! 😀
Entertain Like a Gentleman retails for $27.95, and can be found on LikeaGent.com along with free recipes and other fun stuff!
this would be a great gift for a bachelor.
