If you’re like me and don’t have prescription coverage, you probably keep your eyes peeled for any ways to reduce RX expenses. Among the things I do is price check at multiple pharmacies, sign up for prescription discount cards, utilize store coupons, and take advantage of any other applicable discounts. Recently, I learned about the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens, another option for saving on prescriptions. So what, exactly, is the Prescription Savings Club?
The Walgreens Prescription Discount Club is a service that offers discounts on over 8,000 brand name medications as well as all generics. You need to purchase an annual membership in order to receive these discounts, which also extend to pet prescriptions, flu shots, and other supplies such as nebulizers and diabetic items. You can also qualify for bonuses when you purchase Walgreens-brand products as well as photofinishing services. Right now, Walgreens is offering a limited-time discount on Prescription Savings Club memberships, with an individual membership retailing for $20 while a family membership – which covers you and everyone in your immediate family, from spouses to dependents aged 22 years old and younger, and even the family dog – costs $35. Those who have Medicare, Medicaid or other federal/state health care coverage do not qualify, but if you lack or have insufficient prescription drug coverage, you may be a candidate for this program.
As with all discounts, it’s important to weigh up the costs and benefits before leaping in so that you can make sure you’re getting the best deal. If you are interested in obtaining a Prescription Savings Club membership, I would encourage to research it carefully, compare with other pharmacies and determine your family’s needs to see if it would be a good fit or not. FYI, Walgreens says that if you don’t save more than the cost of your membership during your year of membership, they will refund the difference.
