I’ll be honest, I’ve always thought that “Date coupons” were kind of cheesy. I can understand why the sentiment of “One free hug” or what have you is nice, but I just couldn’t imagine giving something like that to Jai with a straight face. However, I was recently contacted by a company called Datevitation who have a fresh spin on this concept, and wondered if they could give me a free code to make a coupon book of my own. I thought it might be a little cringe-inducing, but hey, why not!
However, Datevitation pleasantly surprised me. You can build your own custom book of “Date vouchers”, promising to treat your significant other to a variety of fun activities, ranging from going out to dinner to relieving them of a chore they normally do. Although the idea is a familiar one, I like that the vouchers are represented with cute, quirky stick figure illustrations that make it seem a little more fun and less over-the-top sappy. The book is fully customizable and recognizes the diversity of today’s couples, which I thought was really nice. Just a quick FYI, they also have some categories that are “R-rated/Adults only”, but those are blocked by an age warning so you won’t be greeted with mature content just by opening the site.
When I was creating my book and picking out things that Jai might enjoy, it dawned on me that this is actually a great idea for us. Whenever it’s one of our birthdays, the other always takes the day off so we can hang out – for example, on Jai’s birthday, he’ll enlist me to help him build furniture, and when it’s my birthday, we’ll sit around and watch The Voice. 😉 Point is, we already gift our time to each other because it’s the most precious resource we have. Although I’ve always dismissed these books as being a little dorky, it’s actually a great idea, since getting this coupon book will remind Jai to “Cash in” during the New Year and it will give both of us a reason to step back from work and commitments and take time to ourselves. With as overworked as we’ve been, I can’t think of a better gift, and now I’m actually excited to put it in Jai’s stocking!
The book I selected has five coupons, and I picked things like “Video Game Night” and “Wild Card”, so he can pick whatever particular furniture/computer-building project he’s got going on at that time and enlist me to help. 😉 It arrived packaged in a cute little box that says “Surprise!” on it. I thought the presentation on this was really fun, and it’s changed my mind on this whole “Date coupon” idea!
