The holidays are all about giving and sharing traditions. This week, I had the chance to pick up an iconic Christmas present: A Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun! And one lucky Contest Corner reader will win a prize pack that includes your choice of either a Daisy Red Ryder OR Pink Carbine Model 1998, BBs, and safety glasses, so read on for your chance to enter!

When I shop for Christmas gifts for younger members of the family, I find myself drawn to the same classic toys that I myself played with as a child. I think back to the excitement I felt when receiving them and hope to pass that joy on. And this week, I had the opportunity to do just that when I picked up a Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun. There are some items that are just classic gifts – dolls, blocks, books – and I think a BB gun definitely falls into that category. My family weren’t the outdoorsy type so I never owned one myself, but Jai grew up with all kinds of BB guns and has a lot of fond memories of the fun he had with them. It makes me smile to hear his childhood stories, so we both thought it would be a lot of fun to buy a BB gun for his teenage cousin this Christmas!

The Red Ryder is probably the most iconic of all the BB guns – the whole plot of A Christmas Story centers around little Ralphie hoping and wishing for a Red Ryder from Santa! The modern-day Red Ryder is charmingly packaged with retro illustrations, which gives it a really nostalgic and timeless feel that I love. Jai and I decided to pay a visit to Walmart yesterday to pick up a Red Ryder to gift, along with some fun accessories. You can read all about my shopping trip by visiting my Google+ album here!

In addition to the Red Ryder gun, we also bought a package of BBs and a pair of safety glasses. Remember how Ralphie’s mother didn’t want him to have a BB gun because “You’ll shoot your eye out”? I bet she would have felt much better if she’d had these glasses! Safety is always a concern for me, and Jai and I discussed his experiences as a boy using a BB gun and thought about safety gear before purchasing. I also had a look at Ten Shooting Safety Rules from the Daisy website, which is important information for everyone in the family. I would highly recommend printing this page and tucking it into the box before wrapping!

With all my bases covered and items purchased, I set about wrapping the gift!

To decorate the present, I also bought special black and green wrapping paper featuring deer antlers and some candies that coordinated with the wrapping paper. I wrapped the BBs and safety glasses in a small box, which I taped on top of the BB gun and decorated with bows, ribbons, and the candy.

These mint chocolate candy canes matched the color scheme of the wrapping paper – and were delicious! 😉 I taped them under the ribbons as a cute little embellishment to the package.

I also found this “Buck Bar”, a cute chocolate bar that matched the wrapping paper and general outdoors theme of the gift. I taped it to the gift, stuck a bow on top and tucked the gift tag underneath.

And hey presto! It’s a “Wrap” and ready to tuck under the tree!

Jai and I had so much fun picking out this gift. BB guns have always been a popular item in his family, and it was fun for me to learn the difference between BBs, pellets, pump guns, and how they all work. One of neat parts about getting married is getting to join in each other’s family traditions! We made a great team, with Jai providing his expert advice on the best things to buy with a BB gun and myself providing the artistic embellishments on the package. I think it turned out to be a great gift!
