Recently, I was brainstorming baby shower basket ideas, because I love wrapping presents; it’s so much fun for me, and I feel like it’s almost becoming a lost art. I put together a cute little gift basket for a family baby shower, and I thought I’d share some tips and ideas – I know I always really enjoy getting inspired by seeing different gift wrapping techniques!
TL;DR – No time to read, or just prefer audio? Watch a video summary of these baby shower basket ideas below and listen to the highlights!
1. Look For Practical Gifts That Mom Can Really Use
There’s a lot of supplies that new parents need, so a practical baby shower gift is always appreciated. Diapers, clothing, and bottles are standard classics that always come in handy. It’s also a good idea to check if the pregnant person has a registry, so you can get an idea of what specific items they may have already bought and what they’re still in need of.
One of the presents I chose to include in my gift basket was the Baby’s Daily Log Whiteboard by Mewl, as seen in our 2023 Mother’s & Father’s Day Gift Guide. This reusable dry erase board helps you keep track of feeding times, diaper changes, and naps, with freeform space to write notes and jot down a shopping list. It’s also magnetic, so you can hang it on a convenient area like your fridge for quick and easy access. This helps parents and other caretakers keep track, which is nice for those early sleepless weeks with a newborn – mom is already carrying a huge mental load, so at least she can get some of it out of her head by writing it down! This could be useful for when friends and family come to meet the new baby and help out, since they can take the infant for a few minutes to give mom a break and just glance at the board to know the last time baby was fed and changed.
When I first saw this product, I actually thought immediately about an episode of a reality show I had just watched. There was a scene where one of the stars was working on a large whiteboard to help herself and her husband keep track of their tot’s routines. So this is a way you can give a celebrity-level gift without spending celebrity-level money, because the Baby’s Daily Log Whiteboard is only $19.97 on Amazon!
2. Don’t Forget Something Just For Mom.
Moms so often put their own needs on the back burner. That’s why it’s nice to include something in your gift basket that’s just for taking care of mom! This could be something like a fuzzy pair of socks to wear in the hospital or a silk sleep mask to help her grab a power nap. For my self-care item, I went with the Mewl Pregnancy Water Bottle, another Gift Guide pick. We all know water is a big part of self-care in so many different ways. I personally find it hard to keep track of how many glasses I’ve drank, so I love water bottles like this that have markings to let you know where you’re at! The Mewl Pregnancy Water Bottle has a 32 fl oz capacity and hourly markings as a helpful reminder; refill twice a day to reach the daily average recommended 96 oz for pregnancy.
Something that makes this water bottle unique is that it also has a weekly sticker tracker on the back, where you can mark your pregnancy milestones with a cute cartoon representing how big the baby is – for example, I learned that at 40 weeks, it’s the size of a small pumpkin!
Another thing I like about this is that mom can use this bottle after baby comes, so it’s usefulness will continue, unlike most infant products that will be outgrown.
3. Pick Out Some Beautiful Wrapping Paper
Once gift shopping is finished, it’s time to wrap! I always looks for wrapping paper with a baby shower theme; other good choices are solid pastel paper, or wrap with cute cartoon animals – anything sweet and whimsical does the trick! Once you’ve got it wrapped, you can top it off with bows or ribbon. I usually check dollar or big box stores for wrapping paper supplies; other good places to check are small local businesses, which are often great for finding unique gift wrap. You can also get cute handmade paper on Etsy!
I recently had the privilege of inheriting some very special wrapping paper that had belonged to our beloved Grammy, who passed away at the beginning of the year. She had the most extensive wrapping paper collection I’ve ever seen, and I find treasure after treasure as I go through and organize her wrapping supplies. She had wrapping paper for literally every occasion – including the 4th of July, which I didn’t know was even a thing! So of course, she had multiple kinds of baby shower paper, and I utilized two different patterns that I found in her collection to wrap these gifts, for a fun contrast!
4. Grab a Basket
Once my gifts were wrapped, I chose a nice basket that they would all fit in. I save baskets from Easter or product shipments and keep them in a storage tub so I can use them again as gift baskets. Thrift stores and garage sales are also a great place to find baskets. It also seems fitting for me to share a tip that Grammy gave me years ago: She said that whenever she bought used baskets at a flea market or charity shop, she would put them in her dishwasher to clean so she could reuse them as gift baskets. Brilliant!
5. Wrap With Ribbon and Cellophane
After the gifts are wrapped, you’ll need a roll of cellophane and some decorative ribbon. Cellophane can be found at most big box stores or bought on Amazon. I unrolled my cellophane on the dining table – you’ll need a large surface for this – and then placed the basket in the center. I trimmed the cellophane to fit, then grabbed both ends and tied together using a ribbon to make a bow. For the finishing touch, I wrote out a card and then placed it in an envelope and wrote the mom-to-be’s name on the front. I taped it to the center of the gift basket so that it would do double duty as a card/gift tag. And hey presto, you’re done!
